REPEAT AFTER ME: Repetition Rules!

Every educator understands the power of repetition. Sometimes our students simply need to memorize facts and information. At other times, it’s all about practice, practice, practice until a skill is mastered. In either case, repetition is required. Repetition rules! However, let’s be honest. Repetition isn’t always welcome in today’s fast-paced, just-Google-it culture. Why bother remembering anything when you can look it up in two seconds?

The answer lies in brain research. Neural pathways are built and strengthened through repetition. (Yes, I looked that up. I guess some things aren’t worth memorizing?) There’s so much information on the internet about this matter. In my search (thanks, Google) three facts really stood out to me.

Repetition is a cornerstone of neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections and strengthening existing ones.

Repetition is essential for learning new skills, forming habits, and acquiring knowledge.

Repetition plays a key role in habit formation, as consistent practice and reinforcement help solidify new behaviors into automatic routines. (1)

So why am I suddenly obsessed with repetition? There are a couple of reasons.

First, I’ve been reading the Psalms lately. Have you ever noticed how many of them repeat the same themes—and sometimes use the exact same words? . Here are just a few examples.

  • His steadfast love endures forever.

  • The Lord is my rock/refuge/strength/fortress.

  • Praise the Lord.

  • Do not be afraid/fear not.

  • You are my God.

  • You will not forsake me.

Could it be that God knew we’d need to hear these words over and over again? Could it be that repetition isn't just helpful but necessary?

Second, summertime is a perfect time to learn, grow, and strengthen new habits. There’s so much to do in the summer—rest, play, travel, recharge. All of these are important, but I can’t think of anything more essential than feeding our souls with the truths of God’s Word, over and over and over again.

Repeat after me: Repetition rules.

One of the most striking things about the Psalms is their raw honesty. The prayers, poems, and songs in this collection often give voice to what we’re feeling. Sometimes they draw out emotions we try to keep hidden. Yet the Psalms remind us that openness and vulnerability matter to God. They help us express our deepest hurts, longings, praises, and prayers in a way that’s both real and meaningful.

Living in a broken world requires protection. There will always be controversies to navigate, problems to solve, and hard seasons to endure. It’s not always fun to talk about, but Paul paints a pretty clear picture of this reality in Ephesians.

“For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”  Ephesians 6:12

The only way to stand strong is to arm ourselves with the Word of God—the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17). We cannot use the sword, however, if we don’t know God’s Word. When we spend time in God’s Word—repeating it, memorizing it, letting it sink in deeply—it becomes part of us. Then, when we need it most, the Holy Spirit brings God’s Word to life in our hearts and our minds. The more we know God’s Word, the more prepared we are to do His will and stand firm against the enemy of our souls.

So here’s a question: What do you need to repeat over your life this summer?

So, what’s the takeaway? Repetition isn’t just an educational strategy. It’s a spiritual discipline. Our brains get stronger with repetition, and honestly, our souls do, too. God’s truth needs to be on a loop in our lives. The more we soak in it, the more it shapes how we think, feel, and live. When life gets loud, chaotic, or uncertain, we need those repeated reminders more than ever.

This summer, let’s make space for repetition that matters. Whether you're soaking in the sun or catching your breath between commitments, keep returning to the words that give life. Speak them. Write them. Sing them. Whisper them in the quiet moments. Repetition rewires our minds, strengthens our hearts, and equips us for the battles we face.

Repeat after me—no, really—Repetition rules! This is especially true when it’s God’s Words echoing through every corner of our lives. Happy repeating, and have a happy summer!
