The Start of Something New

Updated: Mar 21, 2018

As an educator, you might be familiar with the lyrics from the song “Start of Something New” from High School Musical. Before writing this introductory blog, I really hadn’t paid too much attention to the lyrics, but I loved the title of the song, so I took a quick peek.

Living in my own world, didn't understand That anything can happen when you take a chance. I never believed in what I couldn't see. I never opened my heart to all the possibilities.

I know that something has changed. Never felt this way, And right here, tonight,

This could be the start of something new.

As most of you know the lyrics go on to describe the beginning of a teenage relationship, but as I pondered the introductory words, I couldn’t help but be somewhat amused at how the lyrics seem to describe how I am feeling. Many years ago (and I mean MANY), God placed a calling on my heart—create a ministry to support Christian educators. The calling was clear, but I lacked understanding and clarity regarding what it all meant. Maybe it was a belief issue or even a heart issue as the lyrics suggest. Nevertheless, God never let the calling or passion die in my heart. Over the years I have wrestled with God’s calling—questioning, seeking, over-analyzing, second-guessing, and even procrastinating. But “I know something has changed.” Now is the time for me to move forward in obedience and watch God work.

Maybe you are like me. God has placed a calling on your heart. It might not be to start a new ministry. Maybe it is as simple as inviting the teacher next door to have a cup of coffee so you can begin to build a relationship and share the love of Jesus. Maybe it is sitting down with that difficult parent to get to know them on a personal level.

We are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works,

which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

Ephesians 2:10

Whatever passion God has placed on your heart, I encourage you to take the first step in obedience. God has gone before you. You were created by Him to share the love of Jesus with everyone He puts in your path. This could be the start of something new!

Patty, I have so many friends in AZ and I feel for all of you! Teachers have been underappreciated for far too long. I'm sure you are already praying for wisdom and discernment. If I were you, that is what I would be doing! I would also pick a verse that you can hold onto. When we go through turmoil like this, the world is watching. For me, I often gravitate toward a verse like Galations 5:22 (Fruit of the Spirit). It is possible to stand up for what you believe in a Godly way! Jesus did it. I am praying for teachers in AZ!

What perfect timing our Lord has! I am an instructional coach in Arizona, and public education is in crisis in my state. Our students need a great deal of instructional support due to academic gaps and challenging family dynamics, and we are pleading with our state leadership to increase funding to schools. As a Christian, I am wondering how to navigate the political waters and be an advocate for public schools while maintaining a conservative political ideology. Thank you for your encouraging words for Christian educators!

Jackie, I am already so encouraged by each of your initial blog postings. Thank you for being obedient and for letting God use your passion to encourage others. I am so excited to see how God will use this to minister to all who need a reminder that we are called to let our light shine! I am completing my 28th year in public education and can honestly say that I considered it my mission field. My prayers and support are with you! I look forward to our next conversation!
